You’ll be transported to a tiny island — just 13 acres — in the central Philippines as you enjoy images and stories of the colorful quilts and the more than 100 quiltmakers of Caohagan Island. You’ll see photos of more than 50 of these handmade, one-of-a-kind quilts plus be introduced to the unique techniques developed by these quiltmakers whose tools are simply fabric and scissors, needle and thread. I spent more than a month on the island, quilted with the residents, went fabric shopping with them on nearby Cebu Island, and snorkeled the reef that surrounds Caohagan. Those who view the quilts come away smiling, inspired by the creativity of these women and men. This lecture is perfect for warming up a winter guild meeting.
Dana E. Jones
Dana E. Jones is a quiltmaker, teacher, writer, and editor who claimed her identity as a quilter in 2003 after attending a life-changing quilt event in Alabama. After years in journalism and nonprofit leadership, she transitioned full-time into quilting, studying the art, teaching classes, and eventually working as editor of Quilters Newsletter and the SAQA Journal. Her passion for storytelling led to her book Pagtinabangay: The Quilts and Quiltmakers of Caohagan Island, highlighting the artistry and resilience of quiltmakers on a 13-acre island in the Philippines.
Dana lives at 9,200 feet in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, where she designs and teaches from her home studio, often incorporating foundation paper piecing and inset circles in her work. She’s taught for more than 100 guilds across North America, at major quilt festivals, and via Zoom. A journalism graduate of the University of Illinois with additional studies in art, business, and theology, Dana continues to combine her love of quilting, storytelling, and community engagement in everything she does.
