Our Commitment to Community

Since our founding, the Brown Sugar Stitchers Quilt Guild has woven community service into the very fabric of who we are. Through quilt-making, education, and outreach, we use our creative talents to bring comfort, joy, and connection to those in need.

Signature Project: Carrie Steele-Pitts Home

Our longest-standing partnership is with the Carrie Steele-Pitts Home (csph.org), a nurturing home for children in Southwest Atlanta. Inspired by founding member Rosalind Rubens Newell, who served on CSPH’s board, the guild adopted the Home as our signature public service focus in 2001.

Every year since, we’ve created and donated custom-made quilts—averaging 20 per year—to children in the Home. In 1999, we expanded our donations to include handmade pillowcases. Each quilt is a message of care, created to let each child know: this was made just for you, with love and warmth that lasts.

In the words of founding member Maxine Moore:

“By giving them these quilts, we hope they know that there is somebody that cares and is concerned about them. We want them to know that these quilts belong only to them and will last through the years.”

Sickle Cell Anemia Patients

Coordinated by member Jennifer Morrison, we donate quilts and pillows to children undergoing treatment at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Hughes Spalding location.

You can support this tradition by donating fabric, supplies, or your time and skill. Contact us at bssquiltguild@gmail.com to get involved.

Projects Outside of Metro Atlanta

We are proud to have extend our reach to other important causes, including:

  • FACES: The National Craniofacial Association
Led by Joyce Turk, BSS supported this nonprofit in 2018 and 2019 with donations of handmade quilts for children across the U.S. living with craniofacial differences.

  • Youth in Zambia
We’ve provided sewn purses filled with menstrual supplies to support girls in accessing education and health with dignity.

  • Tribute Quilts
We create and donate tribute quilts for families affected by violence, offering a symbol of comfort and solidarity.

  • Community Events & Organizations
Our members have supported enrichment programs at local schools, the High Museum of Art, the Atlanta History Center, the National Black Arts Festival, the Girl Scouts, and Quilts of Valor.

Education & Skill-Building

Learning is central to our mission.

Throughout the year, we offer:

  • Presentations and lectures by guest speakers

  • Hands-on workshops in quilting techniques and textile art

  • Demonstrations in everything from traditional quilting to modern, improvisational, and art quilts

Our programs welcome all skill levels—from beginners to seasoned quilters. Members are encouraged to suggest speakers and workshop topics by contacting our VP of Programs.

In 2020, we launched a scholarship for members to attend BSS-sponsored workshops, continuing our dedication to education and artistic growth.
