Awestruck Before an Unforgettable Nubian Queen – From Gee’s Bend to Royalty"by Carolyn White

We are thrilled to celebrate Brown Sugar Stitchers member Carolyn White, whose stunning quilt “Awestruck Before an Unforgettable Nubian Queen – From Gee’s Bend to Royalty” was awarded Best of Show at the 2021 Atlanta Quilt Festival.

Carolyn’s powerful and visually captivating work caught the attention of The High Museum of Art in Atlanta, where it was acquired for their permanent collection. In a message from Katherine Jentleson, The Merrie and Dan Boone Curator of Folk and Self-Taught Art, Carolyn learned that her quilt was officially installed in an exhibit in early December.

This incredible honor is a testament not only to Carolyn’s artistry and storytelling but also to the deep cultural legacy her work represents. Her quilt stands in conversation with the lineage of Gee’s Bend quilters—women whose bold, improvisational designs helped define American quilting and whose voices continue to inspire generations.

Carolyn, we are so proud of you. Your work uplifts the beauty, dignity, and power of Black women, and we’re honored to have you in the Brown Sugar Stitchers community.

Stay tuned for more member spotlights celebrating the creative brilliance within our guild.
